CAUSES OF CRACKED VOICE AND SOLUTIONS

Josiah Kadiri | March 7, 2022

Developing a cracked voice during a singing ministration is one of the biggest fears of any upcoming singer. This is because a cracked voice is a strong hindrance to an effective ministration. In this article, I am going to be highlighting the causes of a cracked voice and how to prevent it.

NOT REHEARSING FREQUENTLY

Lack of frequent rehearsals can affect the effectiveness of your voice. This is because your voice is elastic. Your vocal cord expands and contrasts according to usage. If you only sing during weekends (i.e., during church rehearsals), you will keep experiencing strains in your voice that will cause cracks. Regular rehearsals are key to having a flexible and well expanded vocal cord that can aid singing effectively.

SINGING ABOVE YOUR VOCAL RANGE

Knowing your vocal range is very important.  This is because singing above it can be injurious to your voice. Yes, singing on a high pitch is good but you need to be patient with your voice. it doesn’t just expand overnight so allow yourself to grow gradually into that pitch you desire. if you keep forcing high pitches on your voice that is above your vocal range it can lead to permanent voice damage and that will be regrettable.

SINGING FROM YOUR THROAT

A good voice is a product of air that comes from your lungs supported by your diaphragm. When you sing with air from just your windpipe, it puts a lot of pressure on your Larynx, leading to cracks in your voice. No matter what happens do everything you can to avoid singing from your throat. It tenses your vocal cord and causes cracks in your voice.

DEHYDRATION

A dry throat is a strong stimulant for a cracked voice. You should always have your throat moistened with water if you want to keep your voice in shape. It is always advisable for beginners to stick with room temperature water to avoid tightening of the vocal cord which leads to cracks in the voice. Water is very good for your voice and taking a lot of water helps to keep your throat moist. So, avoid singing with a dry throat. It is very good to take in water before going up the stage to sing.

STRESS

Singing involves every part of your body. This is what most people don’t know. effective singing comes from a relaxed mind and body. when you are mentally or physically stressed or tensed it can affect how you produce air from your vocal cord which in turn can lead to cracks in your voice. Do your best to put yourself in a relaxed state before singing.

In conclusion, it is important to know that having a cracked voice doesn’t mean you can’t improve on your singing. It鈥檚 only an indication that you need to sing more and exercise your voice more to enable your vocal cords to expand. Some people even attain a higher vocal range after recovering from a cracked voice, so keep using that voice!
